Our band - yesterday and today
Band origins date back to early 80’s, when 5 teenagers in Czechoslovakia were so much impressed by tapes with
American bluegrass music to begin learning to play instruments and soon form a band.
Taras Sevcik (banjo) - the only founding member now - resides in Austria since 1989.
The other band members are czechs. That is why band is labeled as austrian/czech. Since 1993 New River Train
have been playing as a regular yet part time act. The band has played numerous shows and festivals in Austria,
Germany, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Switzerland.
Sharing stages with Tony Trischka (USA), Radim Zenkl (USA) or Blue Highway (USA) in 1998 belongs to the
highlights of NRT’s performing career in the past 10 years. Another highlights are participations in big european
festivals organised by EWOB (European World of Bluegrass) together with the best of bluegrass bands in Europe.
The band was reperesented twice by one their song on EWOB's sampler CD.
In 2001 some of the original members decided to pursue playing in other bands. Guitar player and singer
Michal Hromcik (CZ) and bass player Tomas Kubin (CZ) joined the band. Fiddler Milan Kalcu left in 2005 and was
replaced by Milda Toman (CZ) who contributes with vocals and mandolin.
2009 finds us with a new bass player: Tomas decided to take a break from touring and is now replaced by young
talent Filip Hromcik on bass and vocals.
The first CD by the band recorded in 1997 is now almost out of print. In 2008 band pleased their fans and audience
with a new collection of recordings. The new album represents what guys are doing now - mostly with arrangements
as they sound live. Only two songs contain some overdubs and there is one spoken track contained as well by a real
big and world famous celebrity of bluegrass music.
So the New River Train are now:
